Description
Shirt 'to the hem,' made of bleached hemp canvas (body from finer canvas, hem from coarser canvas). Straight silhouette. The sleeve has an insert sewn along the warp, with a gusset, gathered at the top with 'puff stitches,' and gathered at the bottom into a band. The body and inserts are gathered at the neckline. The neckline is square ('kare') with a slit in the center and a loop buttonhole, finished with a narrow band. A white mother-of-pearl button is on the left side of the band. The inserts and sleeves are decorated with a floral ornament in red and black cotton thread using the cross-stitch technique. The insert has a horizontal stripe of flowers and leaves connected by branches, framed on both sides by a thin stripe of stylized flowers. The sleeves feature a scattered pattern of round seven-petaled flowers with two buds. Legend: Purchased in 1959 from Dzyubenko Ulyta Melentiyivna in the village of Myrne, Krasnokutsk District, Kharkiv region.
